It can sometimes be difficult to know if that guy you’re dating will turn out to be an abusive partner. But the words people say do reveal what’s in their heart. Here are the kinds of words that should raise a red flag in your head.
1. “Why can’t you be like…”
A man who constantly compares you to other people will not be pleased with you, no matter what. If he keeps asking you to be thin like Tola, cook like Cynthia or dance like Debbie, then it’s time to let him go. This is a sign of a controlling man. At the very least, it shows a man who is not ready to take you as you are.
2. “You should be happy I’m with you.”
This is a major sign of an abusive partner. They mess with your head and make you feel like no one else would want you. You start feeling as if you should worship him for just being with you even though he is not Mr. Perfect himself. If he says this, even in jest, you should definitely keep an eye open.
3. “I (insert mean act here) because I love you.”
An abusive partner wants you to think any bad thing he does to you is for your own good. So you may hear things like, “I insult you because I care,” or “I shout at you only because I love you.” It’s only a matter of time before you start hearing “I beat you up because you’re dear to me.”
4. “You are useless.”
A man who makes you feel like you are of no use to him is not a man you want to be with. If he calls you useless or other variations of the word, then it’s time to run before he completely messes up your mind.
