Finding your personal style can seem harder than it is. Especially when you’ve been at it for some time. We remember the days of copying head-to-toe looks because they looked good on someone. Only to try them and look very much like a dog trying on a cat costume. But that’s all in the past now.
We have some effective and critical tips that will help you figure out how to find your personal style. They take you through the basics, down to your obvious questions. As long as you follow our tips thoroughly, you’ll be on your way to the glow up life in 2019.
Here are 5 tips that worked for us:
1. Get the basics
Every stylish woman we know has the basics. They are literally the foundational pieces of your entire wardrobe. And the great thing is, you can mix and match them as you build your personal style.
To secure the basic items, you’ll need pieces like a white collared shirt, jeans, dress pants, a little black dress, a neutral-toned skirt, ballet flats and heels. The essentials create the substance of your look and are literally your step 1.
2. Figure out the pieces you already own and like
This is a great way to find your personal style. Chances are there are some pieces you already own that speak to you. They’re usually the ones you grab first when looking for what to wear. Figuring this out will serve as a guide to what you really like and are naturally drawn to.
For example, if your favourite piece is a white shirt, then your personal style could be clean lines, light hues and minimalist pieces. Or you might really like your yellow blazer. In that case, your personal style might be sleek, chic and bold colours. When you figure this out, you then know what to look for when shopping.
3. Which piece is your outlier?
If you’re having trouble finding your favourite pieces, then this might work for you.
An outlier is basically a piece that doesn’t fit or is too different from the collective. And we are pretty sure you have at least one. This is the piece you probably bought a while ago and still haven’t worn. They might still have the tags, or have only be worn once or twice. This piece doesn’t belong.
Identify, not only the pieces you don’t like but the reason why you don’t like them. These identifiers will help you figure out what to put in your wardrobe and what not to.
4. Look for inspiration
Now that you have the essentials, know what you like and what you don’t, you can start piecing them together. And a great way to know how to find your personal style at this stage is to look for some inspiration.
Look for a blogger, friends or even strangers whose style you like. It is important to not only like the style but to ensure the style fits the criteria you just created with our previous tips. For us, we looked to Folake Huntoon, Blake Lively and Sade Akinosho to see how our sleek, glam with a bang style could come to life. For you, it could be a different group of women. Take a cue from them and use their looks to inspire yours.
