When she isn’t being nominated for awards or hosting influential women, Chimamanda Adichie is being hailed as a literary genius. The accomplished Nigerian writer has been acknowledged in China as the hottest African writer amongst Chinese fans today.
Chimamanda Adichie achieved global fame after the phenomenal success of her many books with underlying themes like gender inequality, patriarchy, racism, political instability among others. The writer, who has had six of her literary works translated into Chinese, is now receiving due recognition in the Chinese literary space. According to Bruce Humes, a Chinese literary translator, Adichie is “By far the hottest African writer among Chinese fans today”
Chimamanda is the third black African writer to have more than five works available in Chinese. This accomplishment is a reminder of her famous Ted Talk titled The Danger Of The Single Story. With most Chinese readers largely clueless about Africa and relying on the stereotypical representations being peddled by Chinese media outlets, Chimamanda books are both an inspiring source of knowledge and a breath of fresh air.
In Chimamanda’s speech, she emphasizes how we must reject the single story and through her work, she is bringing the diversity of the Nigerian story to China. With Chimamanda’s previous works selling more than 100,000 copies in China, Dear Ijeawele is set to be published in China with 8,000 to 10,000 for the first print.
