It goes without saying that the Nigerian system needs a complete overhaul, especially some of the antiquated processes and laws that should be outdated. For instance, why do we still have to fill forms by hand in many government-owned offices this digital age?
Yesterday, Toolz shared her unfortunate experience at the Nigerian Passport office and we’re not exactly surprised. Recounting the story in an Instagram post, she explained how the officers at the passport office refused to take her picture because of her coloured hair. She had to send for a black wig before they attended to her.
In response to her story, other women in the comments section also shared how they had to borrow wigs or even tie wrappers because the officers found something wrong with sleeveless tops. Women are not the only targets, other men including Peter Okoye and Cool FM’s Dotun also recounted how the officials at the office turned them down for reasons like coloured hair or chains. However, the requirements for passport application according to the Nigerian Immigration service portal mentions nothing about coloured hair or chains.
Could it be that the officers at the passport office are simply expressing their bias for coloured hair? Let us know what you think in the comments section.
