We’re always here for women breaking glass ceilings and Kemi Adetiba is definitely one of them!
Kemi Adetiba isn’t new to the entertainment industry. She launched her career as a TV presenter for shows like Maltina Dance All before becoming a boss that calls the shots behind the camera. Kemi is so good at her job that the first time she directed a movie, The Wedding Party, it went on to become one of the highest grossing Nollywood movies ever!
Kemi didn’t only set high standards for filmmaking, she was the genius behind some of the most popular music videos of the late 2000’s. Although she now focuses on making films, her impact on music videos such as Falz’s “Child of the World” remains iconic. After learning the ropes from the New York Film Academy, she returned to direct TY Bello’s “Ekundayo” in 2008. Ten years after, Kemi is still someone we look up to!
We curated 6 of the best music videos she has directed just for your viewing pleasure. Check them out!
1. Banky W’s “Lagos Party”
2. Niyola’s “Toh Bad”
3. Omawumi’s “Today na Today”
4. Falz the Bahd guy’s “Child of the World”
5. Waje and Tiwa Savage’s “Onye”
6. Ego’s “Fall in Love”
While we love Kemi Adetiba for being a trailblazer, it would be nice to see more female directors behind the scenes of our music videos – given how oversexualised they are (and how male-dominated the industry is).
We’re here for more women working behind the scenes of music videos to bring diversity as well as changing the narrative.
Did we mention she has another movie out in cinemas? What are you waiting for? Here are a few reasons why you should be excited about watching it.
