There are many ways to fix colour damaged hair. And many ways that will not have you looking like a drenched poodle. There’s a huge chance you’ve been mixing them up, but we’re here to help.
Before we get started know that we get it. Coloring hair is a way of expression and life. Not to mention it’s fun. We’ve had our fair share of highlighters and dyes…but when it gets excessive, the consequences are dire.
Hair becomes damaged because the hair follicles literally become porous and get filled with holes. Why? Because the proteins and colour are being sucked out to lighten them. It gets the job done but brings hair damage along with it like baggage. Luckily for you, you have us!
We’ve seen lots of damaged hair, so we can boldly say we know a thing or two about what not to do.
1. Bleaching isn’t always the answer
Adding bleach to the already damaged hair will only make things worse because the hair now becomes over processed. When this happens, you could ruin the curl of your hair, and this means you’re left with one alternative. The big chop!
2. Don’t shy away from the natural route
Most times, stepping away from your cosmetics counter and turning to the one in your kitchen is your best bet. Try using a home made hair mask to get your hair back.
Here’s one you can try with argan or olive oil and some shampoo;
– Apply about half a spoon of the argan or olive oil to your hair directly.
– Massage the hair and scalp and then wrap with a plastic wrap, followed by a towel.
– Leave in your hair for 60 minutes and then wash off with shampoo, and rinse out.
Make sure to use a moisturizer after this as colour damage dries out hair and makes it brittle.
3. Stay away from products that have Silicone Dimethicone
This non-water soluble silicone will prevent the necessary products and ingredient from entering your hair shaft. It can also be difficult to remove and has serious build-up possibilities. Your hair has been through enough.
4. Don’t be afraid of the chop
So, your hair is damaged and it looks like there’s no way out. Sometimes, the only way out, is the chop. Keeping damaged hair means the shaft of your hair is going to keep breaking. In the end your hair will be all tangled up without a pot to piss in.
5. Stay away from heat!
Your hair is already unstable, don’t force it to start having suicidal thoughts. Colour damage means brittle hair that is tangled up and breaks. Heat will only make it worse and prone to more breakage. Don’t do it!
