Hair Care 101…Know The Basics!
Healthy hair is every woman’s dream. Whether the hair is long or short. Natural, texlaxed or relaxed. A lot of women want to care for their hair but they don’t know how to. This leaves them at the mercy of Nigerian salons who for the most part are clueless. But life doesn’t have to be that hard. Here is the 411 of the processes and products you need for beautiful healthy hair.
Pretty obvious yeah? But before you roll your eyes, do you know that there are two types of shampoos? Shampoos that contain sulfates and sulfate free shampoos. Sulfates are a type of detergent added to some shampoos. Sulfates are harsh on the hair so you might want to stay clear of shampoos with a sulfate word on the ingredient list. E.g Ammonium lauryl sulfate, sodium lauryl sulfate etc.
Sulfate free shampoos clean your hair without stripping it of its natural oils. It’s the best type of shampoo for healthy hair. To know it, the ingredient list should not contain any sulfate word.
2. Deep Conditioning
After washing or chemical processes like relaxing and colouring follow up with deep conditioners. They restore moisture and strength to the hair. Contrary to what you’ve heard all your life, deep conditioners are NOT a special treatment. They are not reserved for when your hair breaks. In fact, your hair might be breaking from inadequate deep conditioning. They are broadly classified into two categories: protein and moisture. And you need BOTH to have healthy hair.
Moisture conditioners boosts the moisture content of the hair, and is essential to prevent breakage.
Protein conditioners rebuild areas of weakness in the hair which makes the hair stronger and less prone to breakage. For the right balance of moisture and protein, you can alternate uses or mix a bit of both and use each time.
3. Leave-In Conditioning
After cleansing and conditioning, leave-in conditioners further improve the manageability and general state of your hair. They are also either protein or moisture based and again you need BOTH. If you deep condition with protein, then you should use a moisture leave-in and vice versa.
4. Daily Moisturizing And Sealing
This is a two step process which keeps the hair hydrated. Firstly, a moisturizing cream or lotion is applied to the hair, then a little oil is applied over the moisturizer. This seals the moisture into the hair fibre. The moisture levels of our hair needs to be replenished daily so moisturizing and sealing is essential to prevent breakage.
Following this regimen will give you beautiful healthy hair in no time.
